With reference to your confidential letter
of the 8th June on the subject of the British
Empire and China Trade Fair, I had a talk with Sir
Malcolm Robertson this afternoon and conveyed to
him in the strictest confidence the information
contained in Sir Andrew Caldecott's letter of the
13th May. Sir Malcolm was very grateful for the
information but he thought that it would be
unnecessary to take any further action as far as
he himself was concerned.
Mrs. Beatrice Thompson is now on her way back
to Hong Kong and is due to arrive there during the next
week or so. Nothing appears to have been done in
England since her departure and it seems unlikely that
she will have been able to secure many more exhibits by
the 30th June when the time limit has been reached.
Sir Malcolm Robertson considered that the political
situation which has developed in China and the threat
